Return of the Repressed

The 'Returned of the Repressed' describes a process where any repressed feelings in the unconsious mind reappear through our behaviour or in our concious mind. One of the main theorists behind the idea is Freud, he believes that certain events or memories that we gain from our childhood sit at the back of our mind and shape who we become. These emotions often determine our behavior or characteristics, without the person recognising a change. The feelings are generally supressed untill we are capable of dealing with them, as it is not socially acceptable to act irresponsibly. This relates to horror as often the main villain character comes from a disturbed background which is now reflected in their monstorous behavior, an example of this is Mike Myers in 'Halloween'.

This theory may also suggest why horror films are so popular, as they allow the general public the chance to experience emotions whilst watching that are not socially acceptable.
